Rick Rubin heard a Cash song inside it

Producer Rick Rubin had helped Cash rebuild his recording career through the American Recordings series. Rubin suggested “Hurt,” but Cash was not immediately convinced that the industrial-rock song belonged to him.

Cash's weathered voice and sparse arrangement changed the center of gravity. A reference to a crown of excrement became a “crown of thorns,” strengthening the spiritual imagery without removing the song's pain.

Director Mark Romanek filmed Cash in the closed House of Cash museum and blended new images with footage from his long career. Awards, broken displays and a banquet table suggest accomplishment that cannot stop time.
