From master to lacquer
An engineer prepares the album for vinyl, managing level, bass and side length so the groove can track safely. A cutting lathe then moves a stylus through a lacquer-coated disc, carving a continuous spiral that mirrors the audio signal.
The spacing must change with the music. Loud or bass-heavy passages need more room than quiet ones.
Creating the metal parts
The lacquer is coated and electroplated to create metal copies. Through several stages, a factory produces negative stampers whose ridges can press grooves into vinyl.
Care at this stage matters because dust, damage or poor plating can repeat across an entire batch.
The press and the finished record
Vinyl pellets are heated into a soft puck. Labels are placed above and below it, the stampers close under heat and pressure, and the record takes shape. The edge is trimmed before cooling and inspection.
A finished copy may be test-played or visually checked. Pressing quality, mastering and playback setup all influence what the listener finally hears.
